“If superheroines existed, Almudena Bernabéu would be one of them“. This is the beginning of the interview that TELVA magazine has published in this month’s issue about the work of Guernica Group’s co-founder, Almudena Bernabéu. Elena Meléndez, the article’s author, highlights Almudena’s successful career in the fight to bring perpetrators of international crimes to justice.
In the interview, Almudena underlines the frustration that impunity generates among victims and the need to focus investigative and judicial efforts on those who bear the greatest responsibility in the chain of command. According to Bernabeu, the most difficult part of her work is the vicious circle of silence and the state apparatus of lies generated around the commission of a barbaric act. Almudena, who claims to have received threats and experienced fear due to her work as a lawyer, focuses attention on the need to continue changing the rules of the game to prevent abuses. Her next objective? “Achieve a formula, through the approval of covenants and the work of international institutions, to create more agile mechanisms to anticipate and prevent the commission of atrocities“.
