On February 26, 2018, Toby Cadman, co-founder of Guernica 37 International Justice Chambers, took part in TRT World RoundTable discussion to consider the recent Charity scandals and the resulting crisis of ‘trust’. The full roundtable was recorded and is available online:
Toby Cadman started his intervention referring to the concerning culture of impunity for sexual abuse within charities, whose structure facilitates the active concealment of these practices and leads to a lack of prosecution and accountability.
Subsequently, he pinpointed two main problems that NGOs are currently facing. First, that the obligation to report properly, both to other organisations and to authorities, is commonly disregarded. Second, the need for tougher restrictions and requirements to meet standards when hiring locals.
Finally, he raised the role of universal justice/international prosecution to end these practices, since the only way to change the problem is by targeting CEOs and the heads of these organisations.
The RoundTable discussion is available at TRT World.
