This is the original version of the verdict that found former Guatemalan dictator, Jose Efraín Rios Montt, guilty of the crime of genocide.
In page 698, the Court concludes that “during the present debate, it has been proven that the Ixil civil population living in the towns of Santa Maria Nebaj, San Juan Cotzal and San Gaspar Chajul were object of massive killings constitutive of massacres, torture, degradation, massive rapes, forced displacement and forceful displacement of children between different groups, and the judges are completely convinced that the purpose of these actions was the physical destruction of the group Ixil as such“.
